Attention parents and students! Registration forms have been distributed to all rising 7th and 8th graders. Please note that the LAST DAY to turn in registration forms is Friday, March 27th! If you need another form, visit http://wgpearsonms.dpsnc.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=135 to download one.

Deadline: Friday, March 27!

Have your students bring their registration form to Mrs. Macdonald or Miss Hovland in room 102 before school, during lunch, after school, or during passing times. The first homeroom at W.G. Pearson Middle to turn in ALL registration forms will receive a prize. Get those forms in!

7th Graders Explore Careers

Through the month of March, Miss Hovland is coordinating with Ms. Durbin’s Journalism class to explore each student’s possible future careers. The nine students in the class are using an online program called Futures 4 Kids (F4K) to aid in their exploration. F4K is a program designed to help students discover options for rewarding and satisfying careers. The online career exploration program utilizes a simple interest assessment that gives students a list of forty careers that fit with their unique talents, skills, and abilities. Then, students can explore over five hundred different careers and communicate with experienced professionals in those fields through online discussion boards.

What career should I choose?

Not only is the Journalism class using F4K, but they are also being given the opportunity to create their own resumes and practice their interviewing skills. Students completed a matching activity in which they categorized various activities and skills into the parts of a resume, and used this knowledge to create their own resumes. Students will also be brainstorming answers to general interview questions and will have an opportunity to practice these answers in mock interviews.

Students are giving fantastic feedback about this careers program. According to Lucy Jayala, “It was fun seeing all the possible career choices for me even though I already knew what I wanted to be. I loved seeing things like the ‘Day in the Life’ of a person in a particular career and felt like I was actually walking in their shoes.” Rachel Utz says that she “feels more prepared for college and high school,” and Kerry Ivory thought that the Matchmaker quiz “listed things that [he] might be good at and careers that [he] thinks [he] would enjoy.”

W.G. Students Attend Inauguration

From January 19-21, students and parents at W.G. Pearson visited Washington D.C. for the Presidential Inauguration. The day of the inauguration, the group was up at 4 a.m., and braved the millions to witness American history. It was freezing, crowded, but so much fun! During the trip students also went to the Air and Space Museum, the National Zoo, and took a tour of the Capitol Building. Ms. Hughes’ 6th and 7th grade string orchestras also had the opportunity to perform at an elementary school in Maryland. Thank you to all parents who offered to chaperone this trip. Our students really appreciated it!!
